International Fiesta!

It’s Wednesday, 9th October, 2019 and students were scrambling to get their national costumes on! It’s International Day for NES! But, you see, this year was different; this year, we got to wear our national costumes whereas in previous years, each class was assigned a different country to wear costumes from.

National Costumes:

Every student was given the choice to wear a costume from their own country or the plain, old school uniform. Naturally, most students chose their country’s national clothes over the uniform.

One student was sporting a plush Polish uniform with a peacock feather strapped to a hat with gorgeous red cushioning on the inside and outside. There was a Sudanese costume with a gold medallion strapped to the hat that was equally luxurious and impressive, with wide sleeves and a unique red, white and yellow design. There was also a countryside-like Belarusian costume with a green, white and orange colour scheme. It had two small pockets made of thick wood fiber strapped around the waist.

Some countries represented were: Korea, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Salvador, Spain, Slovakia, Malaysia, England and much more!

Flavourful Food:

Coupled with costumes, students were asked to bring in a dish from their country. The foods the students brought in were mouth-watering, to say the least. Although there was your typical juice and hotdogs, there were some unusual and new dishes that most people haven’t tried or heard of before. There was a Slovakian pastry with some kind of black-coloured filling that was one of the most unique dishes that I, personally, have ever had. An interesting beverage I tried was Faluda (Rose Milk) from Sri Lanka, which was very sweet and refreshing. These are just two examples from just one class; there is, of course, a wide range of diverse cuisine spread around the school.

Summary:

International day at NES is a great way to show students some of the different cultures around the world. It’s a great way to experience other things that you might have never thought of or heard of, and a great way of finding other countries and learning about their cultures and beliefs. In conclusion, International day is one of the best days in school for learning activities and fun!
