The history of video games

Video games are entertainment for many people; genres and games vary, and there’s a game for everyone. Video games are fun, but have you ever wondered about the history of video games?

The first ever video game is believed to have been invented over 60 years ago in October 1958. That game is called “Tennis for Two”.

Many people started playing video games in arcades. The first arcade game is called “Computer Space”; released in 1971. The company that created computer space succeeded in its second game, “Pong.”

The very first Video game console is called the “Magnavox Odyssey.” It was released in 1972. The console was limited to one or two games built into the console. Unlike Video games nowadays, the very first video games had limited graphics. The Odyssey, for example, has no sound capabilities and can only display monochrome white shapes on a black screen.  

In the 1980s, many popular games were introduced, such as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Tetris, and The Legend of Zelda. A new console was introduced to the United States called The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Nintendo’s Gameboy became popular.

Sony released the PlayStation in the 1990s. Many more popular games and Microsoft’s solitaire came out at this time. Flash was invented at this time as well.

People started to make flash games in the 2000s. Microsoft made the Xbox. “Steam” was started to allow players to download, play, and update games. Mobile games like Angry Birds begin to appear.

In the 2010s, One of the most popular games, Minecraft, came out. More video game genres come out. Pokemon Go comes out and becomes very popular. The Nintendo Switch comes out.
