My Experience With A2 French

In this article, we shall discuss the impact of learning another language and how it aids in broadening one’s horizons of other cultures. I would like to share with you all how taking A2 French has altered my entire perception of France and French culture. Many are merely aware of the stereotypes of the people but never truly comprehend how intriguingly the country functions. Many students assume that all we do in class as A2 students is work on our grammar or write mind-numbing essays when, in reality, we are largely educated on the French’s daily lives and their traditions. We cover themes such as: the changing structure of French families, the French education system, the world of work, festivals, immigration and so on. Thus, we are able to comprehend another culture more easily rather than just centering on the language itself; the course largely focuses on reality, as opposed to merely learning verb conjugations.

Primarily, as a method of improving our literary skills in a foreign language, every French student is expected to write two separate essays- one on a novel and another on a film. I would like to emphasise the importance of this aspect of the course; not only does it enhance our analytical skills, but it also allows us to examine the culture more closely.

In studying the novel (the current one titled ‘No et Moi’), we are able to view the dynamics of the various familial structures of France while also gaining an understanding of how the homeless live in the country.

Regarding the film ‘Intouchables’, there is a portrayal of the compelling friendship that blossoms between two men of contrasting backgrounds. The film is a stupendous representation of the manner in which a low-income immigrant family live in France, with aspects such as social condemnation and ghettoisation being portrayed. It allows a more in-depth understanding of the functioning of French society, while also humorously conveying various inside jokes and references that only native French people would understand.

In addition, taking such a subject has deepened my knowledge in ways that I could have never expected. Prior to the course, I had no clue that the French held multiple festivals annually or that their influence has led to the creation of many worldwide renowned artists in francophone countries. By undertaking French at A2 level, I have had the rewarding opportunity of not only gaining another language but also fully learning about another nation in a multitude of ways.

I leave you all with this quote in the hopes that it will encourage you to seek knowledge on cultures different from yours:

“Language is not a genetic gift, it is a social gift. Learning a new language is becoming a member of the club – the community of speakers of that language.”- Frank Smith
