Cats versus Dogs

Are you a cat person or a dog person?

I, myself, am a cat lover. If you have been on the fence so far, then hopefully by the end of this article, you should be able to find out whether you are a cat lover or a dog lover.

Firstly, we are going to be looking at the pros of both pets, starting with cats.

  • Cats are independent and can be left alone in the house for a long time.
  • Most cats are more of an indoor type so you don’t need to walk them all day, everyday.
  • Cats will always use a litter box and never do their business on your couch unless they’re new to the house, so they might see to it outdoors.
  • Losing a loved one is much easier while owning a cat.
  • A study showed that cat lovers were more intelligent than dog lovers.
  • Owning any pet makes your heart healthier, but cats in particular lower your stress levels as having a cat doesn’t require as much work as owning a dog requires.
  • Having a cat can even help you sleep better.

Now for the pros of owning a dog:

  • Having a dog improves your fitness because you need to walk them almost everyday.
  • 40% of dog owners find it easier to make friends.
  • Having a dog lowers your chances of getting depression.
  • Some dogs have been trained to sniff out skin, kidney, bladder and prostate cancer.
  • Some trained dogs can help blind people walk around.

Over the past couple of days, I’ve been asking people (20 people: 10 boys and 10 girls) what they preferred- cats or dogs. 13 people voted for cats whilst 7 voted for dogs.

Now we will be looking at the cons for cats and dogs but this time, we’re starting with dogs.

  • It can be difficult to sleep with a dog in one’s house.
  • Your schedule now revolves around a dog.
  • They’re way more expensive than one would think.
  • Cutting their nails is possibly one of the most terrible experiences you will ever have in your life.
  • They will wreck your furniture.
  • You will never be able to leave food unattended again… or you will suffer the consequences.
  • Dogs will do ‘their business’ anywhere in the house if they are not in an outdoor area for a long time- and it does have a very long lasting stench.
  • Dogs will chew on your shoes until they are satisfied.
  • In Islam, dog drool is prohibited so you will always need to wash your hand very thoroughly if they ever lick you.
  • You will need to walk them at least once a day in order for them to remain healthy and happy.

Finally, the cons of having a cat:

  • Cats generally consume more food than dogs.
  • You will find cat fur everywhere your cat goes.
  • They will tear at your furniture and unroll toilet paper.
  • One day they love you; the next, they hate you.
  • Cats have huge egos and like things ‘their way or no way’, unlike dogs, who are affectionate and loyal.

I hope this article helped you decide which pet suits you best… And if you still haven’t made your mind,  you can always go for other options like birds or fish!
