While I was writing this article, I was at a loss for words. How does one translate passion? Without a doubt, the Animal Domestic Rescue is one of the most important CCA’s in NES. Not only because we go out and win awards or because we inspire change, but because we are the change.
We work hand in hand with the Environmental Club at the New English School to change not only the lives of the animals that we help, but also the lives of the 30 students that take part in our club as well as the students who don’t. We are currently collaborating with Ghalia’s Animal Shelter, where students learn how to approach, handle, and take care of animals. Thanks to the help of Hassan BuHamad, a dog behaviourist and trainer, we are able to provide students with not only a new-found love and respect for animals, but also an educational experience that enriches them as global citizens. We take students on monthly visits to the animal shelter and use fundraisers to provide the shelter with financial support. During my short time as the coordinator of this club, I have watched students come out of their shells around the dogs. I have watched students go from individuals who are scared of dogs to people who don’t want to leave them at the end of the day. Personally, I grew up in an environment that inspired a deep love and respect for animals which has sculpted me into the person I am today and I hope to enable more people to experience that themselves at NES.
After all, this club isn’t about sitting in a classroom and talking about change; it’s about going out and teaching our students through experience what a big impact a small act of kindness can have.
With Love,
Anamé Du Toit (Coordinator of the Animal Domestic Rescue)
