What is the competition about?
The Roald Dahl competition was an event that took place between Year 7 and Year 8, where students had to create either a new ‘Roald Dahl-type’ character with a description or a fact file about an existing Roald Dahl character.
At the end of the competition, there was a first, second and third place prize for each challenge, and the winners received a couple of books based on their placing.
What do the characters created have to be like?
Creating a character from scratch can be quite difficult, especially with the pressure of trying to encapsulate Roald Dahl’s whimsical creative genius. The characters created had to be unique, original, and extraordinary. Roald Dahl’s characters, of course, were used as inspiration since they are extraordinarily descriptive, and their appearance represents their personality very well.
–A quote from one of the participants:
“ This challenge was really difficult at first, but when I actually got into it, my creativity started to burst. I truly felt like an illustrator creating my very own character.”
Our winners this year were Tia Maria (as first place) who created a character named Naive Nate, Beatrice (in second) and Stephanie (in third) who both made spectacular fact-files.
Our teachers were amazed by the different ways each student designed their character and the way the descriptive paragraphs described them. Well done to the winners and to everyone who participated! Now get out there and do something creative!
