The MUN Opening Ceremony was on the 22nd of September and had over 140 delegate attendees; the experience was grand. Every year, the opening ceremony is an integral part of the programme that introduces the trainers and executives to the newly-joined MUN delegates.
According to this year’s MUN Secretary General, Aliah Al Kazemi, students should join MUN because “MUN is a programme that allows everyone that joins it to become more culturally aware and diverse. It helps you learn to put aside your own opinions and put yourself in other’s shoes. Joining MUN makes you more empathetic, cultured and, overall, a better debater. It is truly exciting, and if you have a passion for debating and diplomacy, this is definitely the programme for you.”
She was chosen for this role due to her amazing set of qualifications. Aliah delivered an inspiring and thought-provoking speech, discussing all the MUN events to look forward to. The way the programme is run allows for a community to emerge through MUN and encapsulate the plethora of values that make a model citizen, thus setting students up to become model adults in the future.
There are a lot of skills one learns when they join MUN. For example, people learn to work together, and it creates a sense of community between students from different cultural backgrounds. Not only that, but students get better public speaking skills and pick up the ability to dissect speeches as well as formulate calculated and intelligent questions. By creating “position papers”, not only does one learn how the ‘other side of the world’ thinks, but students are also allowed opportunities to develop their research skills, as you learn to filter out the ‘fake news’- which is a crucial skill to have in this day and age.
Overall, the MUN Opening Ceremony was an unforgettable experience for a truly unique CCA in which you can learn more than you could ever imagine.
