What is the Go Green challenge?
The Go Green Challenge is an event that takes place over the course of five days. Some of the student responsibilities that are highlighted during Go Green week include caring for the playground, collecting recycled material, and being overall more aware of our environmental impact.
What is the purpose of the Go Green challenge?
The purpose of The Go Green Challenge was to build an understanding of why we are recycling and reusing. This includes the use of sustainable materials, such as reusable water bottles, plant-based fabrics and long-lasting plastic bags. Throughout a five day period, these changes and many more were utilised to help better our environment. Due to this challenge we should start getting more into the habit of recycling, picking up litter and generally being more aware of our surroundings.
What happened?
Day 1 – Results were poor. Many students disregarded the challenge and littered the school floor.
Day 2 – Small improvements were made. The school grounds looked slightly cleaner, although many students near the C-block wall did not use the trash bins.
Day 3 – There was a large difference between days 2 and 3. The school grounds looked nearly spotless after first break, and consequently, we filled two entire bins with plastic waste.
Day 4 – Day 4 was the cleanest day on the playground since the beginning of school and showed the greatest improvement so far.
Day 5 – On the last day, the playground was immaculate; however the C-block wall was again engrossed with trash.
Was it a success?
Overall, the Go Green Challenge was a complete success, as we improved day by day reducing litter. Also, it resulted in NES collecting a lot more bins of plastic waste, especially plastic water bottles.
Any improvements?
Some improvements that could be made are the assurance of a school-wide understanding of the event, as this may eradicate the few students who continued to litter. In the coming year, we expect the best, most fulfilling results possible. Lastly, we should try as a school to keep our floors as clean as possible throughout the whole week and try to fill more bins with plastic waste that could be recycled!
