What is Movember and why do we celebrate it?
Movember is quite a new concept originating in Australia in 2003. Two Australian men (commonly known as the “Mo Bros”) convinced 30 of their friends to grow their moustaches for a whole month. They were proven very successful since the next year, they asked their friends to collect donations that they would donate to the Prostate cancer foundation of Australia.
This event gained a lot of popularity on social media and soon became a worldwide celebration. Now, over 600 million dollars have been raised across the world. Although prostate cancer research was the original focus of the Movember movement, the scope has widened over the years and now includes other aspects of men’s health such as testicular cancer and men’s suicide.
Blue day is a spectacular annual event in our school. “Movember” or “Blue day” is a concept that has been in our school for many years and it has been growing ever since. Our school’s social committee pays a great contribution to this event by selling blue-themed snacks and badges to raise awareness of the issue.
NES also hosts an auction and allows students to wear blue for a day in celebration of this event. They donate all the money they make to charities helping men and boys with such illnesses. The record for the most money raised for this cause has been broken three years in a row which shows that many more people are taking part and have helped raise money towards the cause. Next November, help this cause by buying a badge. Your small donation can make a huge difference in bettering the lives of thousands of people.
