How would you react if you heard someone you know was affected by breast cancer? Well, I’ll tell you one thing, NES and its students sure did make it a priority and took it upon themselves this year to raise awareness and be involved in this cause that has affected millions of people around the globe.
The concept of raising awareness for breast cancer has been around for many years in NES, and it has been growing ever since. The record for the most money raised for this cause has been broken three years in a row which shows how many more people are taking part and helping raise money towards this cause which is truly remarkable.
The social committee had a big part during this occasion. They had a whole month dedicated to raising money and spreading awareness. This was done by selling badges during breaks and putting up posters daily in order to raise enough profits. This means that just by buying that one badge, you made a difference too! Seeing people walking around with pink, breast cancer badges just shows the love and support being shown throughout the whole school.
You might be asking yourself, how exactly does the money we raise help the women who are fighting the illness? Well, all the money that had been raised during the event was automatically given to a breast cancer charity where they deal with helping the women who are fighting the illness.
During Pinktober, events had been held. These included things such as having two presentations, one about breast cancer and the other surrounding prostate cancer. An auction had also taken place to help raise the money for charity.
NES and its students’ progression in making a difference and shedding a light on the importance of being aware and conscious of who could be suffering from this illness and how to help has been phenomenal so far. Even if you didn’t contribute this year, there are always many more opportunities in the future where you can make a difference too.
Here is a quote from a breast cancer survivor:
“I’ve always thought of myself as being a warrior. When you actually have a battle, it’s better than when you don’t know how to fight” – Carly Simon
The sixth formers and teachers were encouraged to dress up in pink to show their support:
