“Our History Did Not Begin In Chains” : A Collection of Poetry for Black History Month

(Title quote by Malcolm X)

Shortest yet most important

Black History cannot be contained

to the shortest month of the year.

Not restricted to a single brief moment in the year.

While this month serves as a crucial opportunity

to amplify black voices, advocate for equality,

And challenge colonial viewpoints, it is essential to remember,

These efforts must persist beyond the designated month.

We remain committed to our collective pursuit of a more inclusive society.

More

It is more than slavery,

more than segregation,

Always more on black history, but never black glory

and every year the same old story.

What about the ancient Africans,

who created medicines, navigations, or technology,

Those who showed knowledge in advanced astrology.

Let us not forget

black literacy, black ability, and black dignity.

Let us not reduce

our history to the pain of fractured pieces,

For black history is innovation, creativity, resilience,

Black history is triumph and all about glory.

Black

Black enhances, Black with chances, Black with privilege,

Black with pride, Black on purpose,

Black and beautiful, highly blessed.

Black and nothing less,

resilient, brilliant, strong.

Infinite like hip-hop and space.

Black is love.

Black is me, Black is you

Not something we get to choose,

but something we get to value.

Something we get to wear

Wear with honor.

Black is an adjective, adverb, color, and noun

Remember, do not compare.

Our beauty is straight out of the birthplace of human life,

Crafted and likened to the blueprint of humankind.
