Sonic 3: A Review

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has captured the essence of the iconic video game series while giving long-time fans and newcomers a great movie experience. The movie starts exactly where the second movie ends, with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles forming a GOAT-ed (Greatest Of All Time) trio to defend their world from anything that might disturb their day-to-day lives.

The introduction of Shadow was the cherry on the cake. Voiced by the always-intimidating Keanu Reeves, Shadow brings the depth and lore that Sonic 3 needed but we just never knew. His backstory is sad and has aspects of emotional depth, just enough to keep the fans entertained but not enough to cause emotional turmoil among us. Shadow’s very being challenges Sonic in ways Sonic or you could have never imagined, both physically and psychologically, creating a sense of rivalry that makes up much of the film.

The man, the myth, the legend, Jim Carrey returns as the crazy Dr. Robotnik and his similarly evil grandfather, Gerald Robotnik. Jim Carrey’s performance is as good as always, it also matches up well with his ability to switch between the two characters. The movie’s CGI is amazing, especially in the action scenes, where Sonic’s speed is animated perfectly, with eye-catching scenes that bring the world of Sonic to life. The film has made so many references to the classic video games with Easter eggs like Green Hill Zone and the Chaos Emeralds, the movie is filled with nostalgic things that make the experience better.

I rate Sonic 3 an 8/10 as it lived up to the hype of the trailer and fan expectations(in MY opinion). Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a nice new addition to the movie series. It gives a much-needed balance of action, humour, and sincere moments. Whether you’re a Sonic Stan or just looking for a fun animation film, this movie fulfils in all aspects(in the animation field of course).
