The new Wicked movie is all the rave! It stars famous pop star Ariana Grande and talented actress/singer Cynthia Erivo, working together to bring the magic from the classic broadway musical to the big screen. The director, producer and screenwriter of the film, Jon M. Chu began its production in late 2022 and released it in November 2024, and it hit the world by storm after anticipation for nearly two years. People were thrilled about the movie’s release, theatre fanatics especially; which is part of the reason why the movie skyrocketed in the box offices.
The film became the highest-grossing movie based on a Broadway musical; they hit this rank only 3 months after its release! Popular Broadway musicals typically get turned into films that often end up extremely successful, such as “Mamma Mia”, “Grease”, “Annie” etc. These movies seem to do well because they were initially loved by many as a musical, so who wouldn’t want to see a favorite story of theirs turned into a film?
As stated previously, one of the movie’s main stars is Ariana Grande, a famous figure with acting and singing experience. She enthralled many with her performance in the movie. Ariana had declared many times, years before the making of the film, how much adoration she has for Wicked. People see online how emotional she is when it comes to the movie because of her deep, heartfelt connection to the original musical, even as a little girl she always loved the story, performed its songs numerous times and even learned the choreography; it’s only fitting that Wicked’s seemingly #1 fan has been granted the chance to star in its cinematic remake!
Ariana and her co-star Cynthia Erivo have a powerful deep friendship that supports them both in filming and interviews, after and during the movie’s filming process. The two actresses have showcased their sensitivity through many deep emotional conversations about the movie taken place in numerous interviews. These interviews surfaced all over the internet and the actresses actually received a lot of backlash because of this. They were deemed annoying, dramatic and childish when they would cry or express extreme emotions towards the story. Many agreed and disagreed with this judgement, because of Ariana’s deep rooted connection to the story, being apart of it, and the whole process coming to an end through the press tour. This would obviously be an understandably emotional time for the actresses and especially since the film’s release the majority have grown to appreciate the actresses sensitivity rather than ridicule it.
Wicked ended up being extremely successful and it quickly achieved many box office and critic milestones with the latest being the film’s impressive 10 Oscar nominations. The nominations include Best Lead Actress for Cynthia Erivo and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande.
