Meet the teacher: Mrs. Kerr

We’ve asked a lot of kids in our school to tell us who their favourite teacher is, but why? Usually, students can’t come up with any teachers- or reasons, because they don’t know their teachers well enough! So, we decided to change that.

Today, we’re interviewing Mrs. Kerr!

Mrs. Kerr is the Secondary school library librarian- and the Head of House for Gerrha and Dilmun. She’s always on a mission to make the library a more comfortable place, encouraging students to take up challenges and enjoy reading.

  • What is one thing that motivates her to come to work every day?

The students. Everything I do is for them, and to make even just a small difference in their day and school experience.”

  • Why did she choose this job?

One of the big reasons was because her daughter had come to NES; she was informed about the opportunity to come work at the school- she says that she “jumped at the chance” because she wanted to take a risk, not knowing what would happen- but wanting to learn new things and have a challenge because she’d never been a librarian before.

  • What is her favourite-
  • Movie- “This is a tough one. Maybe….. “The Sound of Music” perhaps. I love movies, but don’t necessarily have a favourite.”
  • Show- “Oh without a doubt “Suits” I LOVE it. I also love “The Good Dr”, “Emily in Paris”, ” How to get away with Murder” I love a good series.
  • Place- I absolutely adore Istanbul (Turkey) and Prague. I have so many wonderful memories from trips there.”
  • Food- “Roast dinners 100%”
  • Animal- I adore Camels. I love their eyes and lashes and quirky personalities. This is the same reason I love cows too.”
  • What is her favourite thing about teaching?

Ms Kerr loves the conversations she has with her students both in and out of the classroom. She enjoys listening to their perspectives and sharing hopes, dreams and challenges. ”Making even the tiniest bit of a difference to a student truly fills my cup.” she says.

  • What is one thing she loves about your students?

The unique personalities and perspectives that the students have to offer. She loves the quiet achievers that don’t realise how special they are, the funny ones who make her laugh and the kind ones who assure her that the world is in good hands. She says that she can always find something to love and appreciate in a student. Awww, that’s so sweet!

  • What’s her biggest fear?

Not living up to her biggest potential and being able to make a positive impact in the world- in any way– before she passes (with a big side note of snakes!!) she says.

  • What are some of her hobbies/things you love to do outside of school?

She loves to travel around the world, learning new cultures and experiencing the lives of others while exploring the breathtaking places; another is her adoration for going antique shopping searching for old relics, or just things she can be creative with in general. An unexpected one is the Oasis yearbook, as she is the head teacher running it, and she quotes “I genuinely love spending time working on it so much!”

  • What is a pet peeve of hers?

Straight forward with it, she says hates bad manners!!

  • A secret or hidden talent?

She is a published author on a non-fiction book, still selling thousands of copies in Australia which help teens get jobs.

  • How would she describe school in 2 words?

Challenging and rewarding!

It’s always fun to get to know your teachers a bit better- whether it be their favorite colour, or why they come to work every day. Knowing something more about them helps us understand their lives as much as they try to understand ours! While interviewing Mrs. Kerr, we learnt many new things about her- even though we’re at the library quite often talking to her, also we discovered things- like the fact that she’s a published author!!

Lastly, we’d like to give a huge thank you to Mrs. Kerr for taking the time in her day to answer these questions- it was a great chance we leaped at to interview her, and we are very grateful to have had the opportunity to have worked with her.
