Struggling with school? Well, the peer-to-peer program has got you covered. The program offers tutoring lessons after school on Wednesdays in a variety of subjects. I got the chance to interview the heads of the peer-to-peer department (Taha Electricwala and Judy Hegazy) about some questions we have been wondering about for too long.
What university are you applying to and what are you majoring in?
Judy Hegazy: I haven’t pinpointed which universities I want to apply to yet but I want to apply to dentistry.
Taha Electricwala: I am applying to 4 different universities: Imperial, Manchester, Leads, and Queen Mary majoring in Aerospace engineering.
What convinced you to join peer-to-peer?
Judy Hegazy: I have always had a keen interest in academics and teaching others so when I found out about this role I thought it would be perfect for me.
Taha Electricwala: Last year I was a tutor and realised that the program wasn’t that good so I wanted to be able to make changes to the environment because the program is important and it is a great way for shy kids to learn.
How do you keep up a good relationship with the people around you?
Judy Hegazy: I think it’s essential to check up on your friends and family and be there for them through everything.
Taha Electricwala: Regular communication is important and keeping yourself interesting so the bond doesn’t fade.
Can you tell me more about the peer-to-peer program?
Judy Hegazy: Yes, of course! The philosophy of the program is for the students, by the students. Sixth-formers get to help and tutor students in years 7 -11 in a wide range of subjects.
Taha Electricwala: Yes, so we put tutors on the website and students pick their tutor depending on the subject then they meet after school on Wednesday
Can you tell me more about the day-to-day responsibility of being the head of peer-to-peer?
Judy Hegazy: Yes, so I have to organise training sessions for the tutors and work on advertising the program and making sure that people know about it and that the program runs smoothly.
Taha Electricwala: Judy and I have to organise training sessions for the tutors and monitor the session as well as keep the program running smoothly.
What accomplishment have you made that you are proud of?
Judy Hegazy: Probably finishing my IGCSE exams last year because it was stressful. As well as being appointed as co-head for this year’s peer-to-peer program.
Taha Electricwala: I was a boy scout and the head of assistance patrols so I had to plan activities for the troop and help them if they needed it.
What do you personally enjoy about this role?
Judy Hegazy: I love leading this program because it is rewarding knowing that you are giving back to your school community.
Taha Electricwala: I enjoy helping the students and tutors as well as being able to help the children come out of their shells.
