Critical Thinking: An Interview With Faris Saadat Yazdi

Student: Faris Saadat Yazdi

“You may be wondering what exactly critical thinking is. Or why it can be extremely important and help you further on in life. Critical thinking can be very crucial at certain points in your life. On a day to day basis, we may go through tough situations that can be very difficult, however, this particular subject helps you cope as these problems start to rise.”

Faris Yazdi, is a future Oxford student currently studying at NES; he is an intellectual who is capable of many great things. One of the many great things Faris has achieved was getting the highest critical thinking exam score, for which he received an Outstanding Cambridge learners award. There are many students who may be unsure whether or not to sit the exam for critical thinking. Below is an interview with Faris, which should hopefully help you reach a final decision.

What is critical thinking?

Critical thinking is about trying to round off your education at school. It tests you on your ability to apply basic logic to reach solid conclusions, whether it be in problem solving or in creating a strong argument.

Why is this subject important?

It is important because it builds fundamental skills that apply generally across many disciplines.

Why did you choose to take critical thinking as an exam?

There are several reasons why. I thought it would be a waste to learn the subject without getting to be in true exam conditions. Also, as a subject, it is not too technical and is a nice change from the other A-levels I was taking.

How has critical thinking helped you?

I think it rounded off my education at school and showed me how one might go about deconstructing an argument.

Did you enjoy it?

I would say for the most part I enjoyed it. Again, it is not a relatively demanding subject and the questions have some good variety between them.

Would you recommend this to people thinking about taking the exam?

I would say to people who enjoy solving the sorts of questions that come up that the exam is a good way to push your learning.

Overall, critical thinking can be extremely useful and help you throughout your life. Taking the exam can come as a huge benefit to you. Not only is the subject helpful, but it is also enjoyable; you need a good balance of both within all your subjects and critical thinking is perfect for that.
