Primary Poetry Competition 2020

On the 16th Of January, the primary students had their annual poetry competition. Chosen students from each year group had the chance to go and perform in front of the whole school in hopes of winning. The school encourages this competition for educational purposes and improvement of students’ overall reading, writing and performance skills. The winners for this year were Tia Darwish for year 3, Ayal Yamout for year 4, Darren Rabie for year 5 and Shrihan Singh for year 6.

The competition was planned in December, when everyone in their classes had to choose a poem to perform and later decide whether or not they wanted to take part in the competition. This happened on the 12th of December. When 6 people from each year group  (year 2-6) were chosen after the winter holiday, they started their first meeting. Two weeks later, the day of the competition finally arrived and everyone was ready to perform.

Once all the parents had arrived, the competition began. The students were introduced and, one by one, the year 5 students recited their poems. The poems differed in length, emotion and overall meaning. I was my class representative so I also got a chance to recite my poem. Approximately 15 minutes later, Miss Knox, the organiser of the event, introduced the choir and told the Hall that the judges, Mr. Melvin and Mr. Serong, who are both head of years, were going to decide who the winners were! When the song was over, and the contestants were eagerly awaiting the final decision, Mrs. Knox called all the contestants’ names for a certificate. Shortly after, the moment of truth arrived and the winners were announced.

Overall, the primary poem competition was an exciting journey. The students had practiced well and the teachers had planned a lot for this day to be successful. The primary department couldn’t be prouder of our representatives. We wish them luck for the upcoming challenges. But for now, we all have to hope NES can rise to first place in inter-school competitions. Will we be able to have another successful win for NES as we did last year?
