Phobias

According to Google, a phobia is “an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something”. However, it is questionable how “irrational” some of these phobias really are.

Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is the fear of long words… At this point, they’re just mocking people with this phobia. Yes, a fear of long words may be quite irrational, but it doesn’t mean that all phobias are at this level of cruelty.

Arachnophobia is the fear of spiders- and that is very rational. Some spiders can kill your skin tissue, causing it to turn black. Other spiders can even cause you to sweat profusely, and I’m pretty sure that’s not irrational.

Hydrophobia is the fear of water and this is, once again, an irrational phobia. Having it means you would be scared to swim in water, shower and even drink it.

Astraphobia is the fear of thunder and lightning. I don’t think that being scared of lightning is irrational, although that is just my personal opinion. It is pretty scary to get struck by a lightning bolt at a temperature of 53,540 degrees Fahrenheit when the sun’s surface is only 10,340 degrees. This means that lightning is approximately 5 times hotter than the surface of the sun! That is some pretty terrifying stuff.

Phobophobia is the phobia of phobias. Yes, you read that correctly. This means you would be scared of being scared, which would make you scared of being scared of being scared. This is not only completely irrational, but ludicrous as well- how can you be afraid of phobias?

Algophobia is the fear of pain. I don’t think it’s silly to be afraid of getting hurt, but having a phobia about pain goes too far. I think this goes between irrational and logical.
