The superhero with the power to help save the earth…
Except, we all have that power.
Greta Thunberg is a 16 year old climate activist from Sweden who has always had a dream. A dream of a wonderful future. A dream that she would live in a non-polluted world. She thought everything was okay because that’s what she was told- that nothing has changed and that the Earth is fine… Until she found out the truth that our glaciers are melting and that our oceans have never been more polluted, that the rate of animal extinction is increasing everyday and that the children of this generation may not even have a future.
Greta knew she had to do something. Even though she was only a quiet 16 year old girl, she knew she had to try to make a change. She sat in front of the Swedish parliament every day, holding up a sign, which is now her ‘signature sign’ , saying “skolestreik for klimaet” which means “school strike for climate”. Even though she didn’t completely succeed at first, over time, more people joined her and stood by her.
Greta is quite straightforward. She knows what needs to be done and she now understands completely what’s been happening. She is known for standing her ground and being blunt, even in front of the biggest world leaders. She visits a different country every week to strike with hundreds of people, to raise awareness and protest against climate change; and that’s what makes her an inspiring role model to many.
“I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic, and act as if the house was on fire. Because it is.”
I, personally, didn’t realize how incredibly urgent this issue truly is until Greta had highlighted it in her speech to the world leaders at the 2019 UN climate action summit in New York, and I think that was the case for most people. I try to help as much as I can, and I encourage you to do the same… To act as if your home is on fire, because it is, just as Greta Thunberg has said.
Use recycling bins, eat less meat, try to use the least amount of plastic wrappers, spoons, cups, etc. you can. Every little bit counts. And if you can, help more. Because that counts twice as much.
