What is coffee morning?
Coffee morning is one of the many charity events the school has throughout the course of the academic year. It is an incredible event that is hosted by the Social Committee around three times a year. It’s a morning where all of the teachers can sit down to take a break from their extremely busy and eventful timetables. It gives them time to enjoy a wide variety of foods that are homemade by the members of the team, as well as coffee and/or tea during their stay. As there are a few coffee mornings throughout the year, there is one that is applicable to more than just the teachers that takes place around December and allows the sixth formers to attend as well.
What charity does coffee morning support?
Coffee morning isn’t only a time where the teachers and occasionally sixth formers can relax, but it is also for a good cause. The Social Committee Chair, Aysha Al Arfaj, planned it so that they could put all the money raised from selling tickets together and send it to the Macmillan Cancer Support Organisation.
“This is an incredible organisation which helps people who are suffering from cancer in a variety of ways by providing financial, emotional, and physical support.”
How did coffee morning start?
You may be wondering how coffee morning had started. Aysha explained,
“When the first Social Committee of The New English School was established, the head girl, Hebah Bibi, put forward the idea to host charity coffee mornings in support of cancer research. We’ve always supported the big annual Macmillan coffee morning since then!”
Hence, this has been an event that people could look forward to and get excited about since then.
What is planning like?
Planning Coffee Morning is not easy. Aysha Al Arfaj describes the thought process and planning,
“Preparing and hosting coffee mornings each year is a significant responsibility for all of the Social Committee members. From the organisation of the morning to designing and selling tickets, everything ran smoothly during the planning stage because of the combination of enthusiasm and cohesion between the committee members.”
We all appreciate and understand how hard the Social Committee worked to make sure that the event went well and ran smoothly. This is extremely difficult when you have quite a lot of people to account for, and requires organisation and team-work skills.
Thank you to the Social Committee for always perfecting coffee mornings and for ensuring that charities get the funding they need in order to make the world a better place.
