AFCON

What is AFCON? The African Cup of Nations (usually known as AFCON) is a football competition where all the African nations come together and play matches to see who wins the cup. Now this article answers two questions. Who won this year? And are people happy about it?

AFCON WINNERS

Founded in 1957, AFCON is arguably the most exciting event to watch in the whole of Africa.  Leading to it being the most sought after trophy in Africa. People crave the competition to start as it always leads to excitement.. Egypt has had the most trophies with a record of 7 titles, which they won in 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008, and 2010. Followed by Cameroon with 5 titles and Ghana with 4. Oh, and did you know that AFCON has gathered more people than the Super Bowl?

PEOPLE ARGUING

Why are people arguing about a cup? The final, a match between Morocco and Senegal, was described as a “disgrace” to African football due to the dramatic scenes, including Senegal players walking off the pitch to protest a late penalty awarded to Morocco. Currently, the arguments are getting intense over just how petty the final became. Everyone is focused on the “Towel Wars”—it felt unreal watching ball boys and staff actually stealing the Senegalese goalkeeper’s towel just to mess with his head. On top of that, there’s a feeling among fans that the supervision was questionable. People are convinced the referee was protecting the hosts, leading to all the accusations that the game was rigged and biased from the start.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT

At the end of the day, Senegal managed to get the job done, walking away with a 1-0 win and the trophy. It’s a bit sad that the conversation is still stuck on the towels and the officiating, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that they held their heads high and got the win. They are leaving as champions, while everyone else is left arguing about what actually went down on the sidelines. Overall this competition is about being passionate for football. Importantly, if there was no debate it would seem like the fans don’t care. In a sense, when we as fans argue and question things it shows our desire to win and our pride for our nation and club. Who do you think should have won?
