Picking up where the first Wicked movie left off, the sequel explores the consequences of choices made by both Glinda and Elphaba, the tension between good and evil, and the enduring bond between its central characters. This review will evaluate the film’s performances and narrative to see whether it lives up to the high expectations set by its predecessor.
It can be stated that, without a doubt, the second wicked movie definitely takes a much darker and complex tone than the previous movie. Both central characters have made their choices. Elphaba, the main protagonist, chooses to fight for the rights of animals in Oz, earning the label of the ‘Wicked Witch of the West,’ while Glinda, the secondary main character, remains under the Wizard of Oz’s watch and takes on the role of his official spokesperson. As the movie progresses, both characters are faced with moral dilemmas, political schemes, and personal sacrifices. The movie is very evenly paced, giving the audience scenes with high-stakes action while maintaining the quieter emotional moments that reveal the depth and strength of Glinda and Elphaba’s struggles.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s performances were spectacular; their natural chemistry, which is so blatantly conveyed throughout their interviews, only brings more authenticity to both their rivalry and friendship. Many supporting characters, such as Fiyero, Nessarose, and the Wizard of Oz, are given more depth than in the initial installment, which allows the world of Oz to grow in the audience’s perspective and gives the story more depth. Every character fulfills their purpose, as the emotional stakes are constantly high, making the story
resonate with all audiences on multiple levels.
The soundtrack of Wicked for good definitely rivals the original Wicked soundtrack as it seamlessly highlights the emotional moments, builds tension, and provides relief during lighter scenes. The songs of the Wicked musical are, without a doubt, the highlight of the production both on stage and in the movie; this is obviously expected as songs such as ‘For Good’, ‘No Good Deed’, and ‘Defying Gravity’ are the most critically acclaimed songs across the board.
In its essence, Wicked: For Good centers around choices, the consequences that accompany them, and finally, the power of relationships in a person’s life. The film further develops the moral complexities of its main characters by showing that life is not black and white; rather, there is always a grey area. These thought-provoking themes linger long after the abnormally long credits end.
I can personally vouch for this movie as it was truly a life-changing experience to watch. All I can say is that Wicked has changed me for good.
