NEW YORK IN STATE OF EMERGENCY DUE TO FLASH FLOOD

  • Date: 30th september
  • Record: 8 inches of rain
  • Location: Across New York, Hudson Valley and Long Island

On the 29th of September, disaster struck as a huge rainstorm caused flash flooding all over New York. This included flooding streets, trapping cars, leaking basements, collapsing roofs and even leading to floods at terminal A of the LaGuardia Airport. New York’s Governor, Kathy Hocul issued an immediate state of emergency across those areas.

Many locations across New York received approximately 4-8 inches of rain, the upper bound being recorded in some downtown areas. As a result of this, many highways and railines were either closed or suspended, with schools following suit. Additionally, more than 500 flights were cancelled across all of New York’s airports. In spite of all this, New Yorkers did their best to persevere, with some being spotted trudging their bikes through high waters and others driving their vehicles forcefully across waterlogged streets as best as they could.

On top of this, many experts say that these floods are unsurprisingly related to the worldwide increasing temperatures due to climate change. According to the commissioner of the New York City Of Environmental Protection – Rohit Aggarwala – the drastic weather fluctuations are the result of climate change. ‘The sad reality is our climate is changing faster than our infrastructure can respond.’ added Rohit.
