Detective Pikachu was a fabulous movie. It is hard to dispute that Ryan Reynold’s performance as the furry beast that had drank too much coffee gave the movie a fun, mystery aspect to it. This is hard to pull off. While it is best suited for the original “Pokemon” fans, Detective Pikachu brings a sense of fun and unknowing all while roping it back to where everything began.
I personally love how the movie keeps focus on Tim Justice’s Character, Tim, while also building the story of Pikachu. Staying true to the original series, the origin story of Mewtwo doesn’t change one bit, bringing back nostalgia for many. Additionally, one of the main highlights for me was the reveal of the real antagonist. It made the movie unpredictable, which is great for audiences. All the while, Rob Leitsman’s wonderfully rendered Pokémon left the fans oohing and ahhing.
The movie is great for fans who are new to the franchise, even if they don’t have a Pokéscholar. The overall plotline is easy to follow with many twists and turns along the way. The minor easter eggs and Leitsman’s love for the original series can be fully understood in the scene where Tim sets into his dad’s apartment. Leitsman’s love for detail and subtle innuendos are a great addition for Pokéfans. Tim also meets an earnest young reporter named Lucy, who shares an interest with him in Pokémon. The duo and their Pokémon repeatedly risk their lives in search of the truth about a new strange Pokémon, and they slowly unmask the film’s true villain. The antagonist has been hiding in plain sight, as is revealed later on in the film. Leitsman does a great job of misleading us. The overall score was similarly amazing, paying homage to the original Pokémon series.
Overall, Detective Pikachu was great mixture of both comedic and nostalgic elements. The overall plot line isn’t too hard to follow and is undeniably entertaining.
