The story behind the Raheel Bahman Fun Run

Firstly, I would like to thank Ms.Rawa for her time and effort in honouring Raheel Bahman; this article would not have been possible without her.

Every year our school raises a large amount of money for charitable causes.

This event, however, holds special significance as it is deeply rooted in the history of NES.

Raheel Bahman was a brilliant Year 9 student and a prominent part of the NES community. Not only did she work diligently throughout her academic life but she also fought distressing battles with her heart condition from birth.

The Fun Run is an annual event held by NES where attendees sponsor students to run, with the objective being to raise as much money as possible and donate it to charity.

Raheel Bahman took part in the Fun Run the year before her passing, which was on February 13, 2009. Hence, 2019 marked the 10th anniversary of her passing, which is why we believe that her story deserves to be heard and her memory to be honoured in this annual event.

Raheel, in her last ever Fun Run, single-handedly raised 900 KD through her sponsors, showing immense dedication to the purpose of charity and making life easier for those who need it. As impressive as that was, Raheel’s contribution did not stop there- thus, she is celebrated every year and her memory never fades. NES named the Fun Run in her memory to forever cherish her unwavering efforts. Not only that, but her family actively donates 3000 KD each year to the Fun Run in her memory.

Being one of NES’ most meaningful annual events, NES went the extra mile in 2019 to celebrate 50 years of NES in grandeur. Sponsors came from Ahmad Tea, EVA water, L’Occitane, Quttainah Medical Center, Juventus football academy, OVO Bar, The Regency, The Danish Baker, Salad Works, Frost Gelato and Caesars Travel Co.

OVO Bar, Frost Gelato and Salad Works even set up food stalls. However the Fun Run this year did not only constitute of the run itself, it also had a Charity Basketball Tournament after it.

The charities that the Head Girl along with Student Voice decided to donate the funds raised through this years Fun Run was Foundation of Hope.

Foundation of Hope is a Kuwaiti charity formed in 2003 as a response to Ali Abbas, an Iraqi boy who suffered severe injuries when a rocket hit his one in 2003. Ali and a group of other children were airlifted to Kuwait for urgent medical treatment as part of the humanitarian initiative of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah. The Charity’s vision is to support children who are intellectually and physically challenged in helping them adapt and integrate in their community.
